Ministry:

The local chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society is a ministry to help the less fortunate in our church parish and city. The St. Vincent DePaul Society helps with families in an emergency situation when temporary funds are needed.

Meetings:

Dates/Times: Usually the second and fourth Sunday of the month, following the 9:30 AM Mass
Location: Designated classroom in Holy Ghost School

If you are interested in becoming a member please contact Dr. Bon Suarez or Eleanor Fischer at 985-542-6802.

Society Activity:

These volunteer members meet with clients who are in need, some times financial, sometimes spiritual, sometimes physical.  Our volunteers try to find a way to help and comfort the client in their time of need.  Sometimes by arranging for a nights lodging, or a meal, or clothing, medicine or even transportation.  The full support of our local Society helps our members as they do this work.  The work is out of the Church and the headquarters store.  In a sense, these are our "Good Samaritans."  They are the vanguard of our Society and we do need volunteers.

Call  985-542-1255 and ask for Dr. Al Cox or Dr. Bon Suarez.

Uniforms for Kids:

The Society, working with the Tangipahoa School Board, provides school uniforms for public school needy kids.  Most of the work for this program will be confined to one week  August 11 through  15, when the uniforms are distributed.

Call 985-542-8900 - Al Ferreira is the coordinator for this project.  This year they are trying to come up with the funds to put two uniforms on 1200 public school elementary and middle school kids.

The Sewing Circle:

The newest and easiest work to join...  taking non saleable material, ie.  shirts, sheets, etc. donated to the store, these ladies provide local nursing home clients with bed jackets, lap blankets, comfort blankets, bibs, sun bonnets and other specialty items.  There are six nursing homes in Tangipahoa Parish.  The sewing circle is now working on items for the third one... they have already made hundreds of each of the items and are now working on a special order for the Landmark Nursing Home.  While the ladies do meet at the store on Tuesday morning, it is mostly to replenish their supply of materials.  Most of their work is done at home, at their own pace and time.  The Catholic Commentator had an excellent article on their work recently.

Call 985-542-8900 and ask for Ruscilla Salomone or Ann Ferreira... or come to the store on Tuesday mornings.

The Retail Store:

This is the most visible work of our Society.  The store is open Monday thru Saturday 10 AM. thru 5 PM  Store Managers are Ms. Michelle Mondebello and  Debbie Anderson.  Call them at 985-542-8900.  The store accepts donations of all kinds and prepares them for resale and in many cases, gives the articles of clothing and or furniture to the needy at the direction of Society members.  Volunteer workers, male and female, of all ages are needed.  Select your hours and come to give a helping hand for as little as two hours to as many as you wish.
The work is light, the atmosphere is enjoyable and the company is very compatible and humorous. Besides, it's amazing how many familiar faces come through the door.

The thrift store is located at:
